Let's heighten the way Hip Hop is offered in class. In here, we emphasize art, education and the roots of hip hop to restructure class as a place of information, not just choreography. My work is intended to give tools to dance teachers that are in need of new information. By applying technique, terms, and dance history from the realm of street dance, my students get to plant their feet in proper foundation. It's about taking Hip Hop beyond "combo-of-the-week".

The resources on this page cover topics that can help teachers do the same. Information is given in a way that helps teachers build from any starting point.

John COmix| Comix | The COmix Hat

Comix is the personal brand of John "Comix" Barrella, a lifelong artist, educator, and practitioner of Hip Hop and street dance. Rooted in movement, creativity, and culture, the name represents a commitment to the art form and the individuality that makes it what it is.

Wearing Comix is about more than representing an artist. It's about expressing yourself, respecting the culture, and carrying your own identity with confidence.

Redef Movement Logo Official (1).png

The Redef Movement: Artists of Street Dance

Established in 2007 under the direction of John Comix, REDEF is a professional dance company built on decades of performing, battling, and educating across street dance culture, stage, and screen.

When you wear Artists of Street Dance, you're representing more than a dance company. You're standing behind a culture, a community, and the art of performance.

Stupid (1).png

Stupid Humans

"Ya Gotta Laugh!"

Stupid Humans is the comedic alter ego of REDEF, celebrating the absurd, awkward, and downright ridiculous things that make us human. Blending physical comedy, movement, satire, and theatrical performance, Stupid Humans finds humor in the everyday nonsense of being alive.

Wearing Stupid Humans means embracing the absurdity. It's a reminder not to take yourself(or the world around you)too seriously, especially when things are tough. After all, we're all just stupid humans.

The Comix Method

The Comix Method is a Hip Hop education system built on authentic street dance foundations, cultural understanding, and the craft of teaching. Developed by John Comix, it exists to help educators teach with purpose, preserve the integrity of the art form, and develop the next generation of dancers.

Wearing The Comix Method represents a commitment to something bigger than dance steps. It's about respecting the culture, valuing knowledge, and taking responsibility for how Hip Hop is taught and passed on.

The Comix Method training and certification has given me the confidence and skills to teach a meaningful Hip Hop class that I originally wasn’t sure about teaching. My students are loving learning the history and “why” behind each step and I’m loving imparting the knowledge I’ve learned.

The Comix Method: Certified Teacher

We were able to host John recently in our studio for two student workshops divided by ages, an adult class and a teacher training. I had followed him on social media and had always been impressed by his level of knowledge and passion to teach REAL hip hop. We were blown away by his knowledge once we met him in person and his training-in addition to his curriculum-has shaped our hip hop program in our studio! I highly recommend using John as a resource however you can, whether it is his curriculum or a live session. He is truly one of the best out there!

I had John out to my studio over the summer for teacher training. I am so glad that I had more than just my hip hop teachers in the room as his tips, exercises and approaches can be used in all genres. They are true teaching tools. John gives a true foundation and education on hip hop culture and brings you back to where it comes from and the why. His personality is infectious and his passion for not only his art  but educating others is evident. He has made himself available  to be a mentor to one of my newer staff members and we have purchased his curriculum for our studio. I can't say enough about him except he is the real deal.

Owner:  Center Stage Dance Academy, Masschusetts

John Comix Barrella has visited our studio three times since 2018 and he has inspired, educated and infused excitement into our hip hop programs.  Not only does he deliver memorable and current class work, he is authentic.  He studies so he can share and inspire with so much knowledge.  Our hip hop instructor uses his teaching material to continue to develop a strong and growing program at our studio.  After year one, our dancers looked forward to learning new styles that were presented with so much detail that they could retain the information and build on John's workshop visit throughout the season.
