Judging Hip Hop (Session 1)
Original Air Date: 4-11-24
This webinar tackles the ongoing battle between competition adjudication and Hip Hop authenticity. The course takes a look at Hip Hop and related styles through the lens of an observer in order to find the right language for adjudication and scoring. Topics covered will include:
Misconceptions: Moves that are mislabeled, dance terminology that doesn't belong in Hip Hop critiques, & dance technique that doesn't apply to Hip Hop.
Corrections: The most common steps you see in a Hip Hop routine, what they're called, and how they look when done PROPERLY!
Common dance steps in styles like Breaking, Popping, Locking, and what to look for.
Language: Expanding your adjudicator vocabulary so you can say more about what you're seeing.
Why should judges AND choreographers take this course?
In an effort to get more educators on the same page regarding Hip Hop, these lessons are meant to show everyone what proper form and performance structure can look like. Judges will learn how to observe Hip Hop better. Choreographers will learn how to maintain authenticity in their work!
